Hello. I'm Richard Ager. Beth Carroll is off. Welcome to this Friday Edition of New Hampshire Outlook. |
RoundtableReturn to index of stories... |
There was plenty of news around the state this week-- including some high-level lobbying on the future of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. We'll talk about that and other state stories a bit later, But first, presidential politics took center stage in New Hampshire on Friday. President Bush paid a visit to the Scamman farm in Stratham, owned by former speaker of the NH House Doug Scamman. 4000 tickets were given out although not everyone with a ticket got in. James Pindell of PoliticsNH.com covered the President's visit -- he's just back from the traffic jam in Stratham and joins us now to talk about that and other developments in the race for the White House. |
Kerry 9/11Return to index of stories... |
In the big surprise department, it seems the presidential campaign is getting nasty. This week, Democratic Presidential Candidate John Kerry slammed the President for what he did on 9-11. Kerry's comments came at a conference for minority journalists in Washington. He was responding to a question of how he would have handled the news of the 9/11 attacks. In response, the Bush campaign said, the attack comes from a candidate "who doesn't know what he stands for." |
Swift Boat AdReturn to index of stories... |
One of the Kerry campaign's biggest selling points is the Senator's service during the war in Vietnam. Now men who say they served in that war with Kerry are attacking him. An organization known as "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" has launched an ad that they say tells the truth of Kerry's time as a soldier. Republican Senator John McCain-- a fellow veteran-- denounced the commercial as "dishonest and dishonorable". adding the Bush campaign should condemn the spot. |

ShipyardReturn to index of stories... |
Once the November election is over, whoever gets elected will have a hefty assignment to look forward to - how to keep the Portsmouth Naval shipyard open. The Secretary of the Navy took a tour of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Thursday. He was accompanied by most of the congressional delegation from New Hampshire and Maine including Senators Gregg, Sununu, Collins and Snowe. The delegation is concerned about the upcoming round of base closures which could include the Portsmouth Yard. Navy Secretary Gordon England said he was impressed with productivity improvements at the yard, but made no promises. During the news conference, I asked him what role submarines can play, given the nation's focus on the war on terrorists - who typically don't have submarines. |
Sen. SnoweReturn to index of stories... |
One potential complication for the shipyard was the fact that New Hampshire claimed sovereignty over Seavy Island where the shipyard is located and took Maine all the way to the Supreme Court - where it lost. I asked Maine Senator Olympia Snowe about that fight. |
Lynch EduationReturn to index of stories... |
This week, Democratic candidate for Governor John Lynch held a news conference to - quote - "discuss his approach to education." Unquote. The news release was carefully worded - and so was his announcement. |
Benson elderly taxesReturn to index of stories... |
Governor Craig Benson this week called for a cap on property taxes for New Hampshire's elderly. Benson first proposed the cap two years ago but lawmakers decided to leave another tax relief program in place that isn't age-specific. Benson wants to cap the taxes for people age 65 and older. He is proposing limiting their state, local and county taxes to ten percent of their income. Benson said he's still working on some details -- including an income test to limit eligibility. Benson estimated the program would cost about nine-million dollars. In response, the state Democratic Party warned the elderly not to trust Benson because he proposed the same cap two years ago and didn't deliver. |

Post Show LogReturn to index of stories... |
August, 6, 2004: We had to tape the program in two parts because President Bush made an early afternoon campaign stop in Stratham. We pretaped the bottom half of the show at the normal 2pm. Then we taped the top half when the Bush tape arrived back to the station and was edited and our journalist also arrived from covering the event. We were done around 3:30pm. |
